Ricochet by Kellyn Carni is a captivating retelling of the Romanov story, offering a fresh take by focusing on the aftermath of the family’s execution. Unlike many other Anastasia retellings that build up to the massacre, Ricochet addresses it right in the first chapter, making room for a more nuanced exploration of the characters’ lives in the wake of such tragedy.
Plot Structure & Pacing
The plot structure is well-balanced and deliberate. Instead of lingering on the dramatic events of the Romanov family’s end, Carni shifts the focus to the repercussions, which feels like a breath of fresh air. The pacing throughout is steady, allowing the narrative to develop without feeling rushed. The story doesn’t dwell on a single event for too long, and the gradual unfolding of the characters’ journeys keeps things engaging.
Characters & Development
While the characters in Ricochet are generally likable—something that’s increasingly hard to find in today’s fiction—they could have benefitted from more depth. Alexei’s development, in particular, felt rushed and superficial, which was a slight disappointment. However, this didn’t detract too much from the enjoyment of the story. The characters’ likability still made them compelling enough to root for, even if they didn’t undergo significant growth or face inner struggles in a meaningful way.
Prose
Carni’s prose strikes a nice balance. It’s neither juvenile nor cringey, making for a smooth reading experience that doesn’t distract from the story. It helps further Anastasia’s charcter and personality, without detracting from the story. The writing stays true to the tone and mood of the story, enhancing the immersive atmosphere of early 20th-century Russia.
Utilization of Symbols & Purpose
There isn’t a heavy reliance on symbols or motifs in Ricochet, and this lack of symbolic depth might leave some readers wishing for more layers in the narrative. While the story doesn’t explore a deep symbolic landscape, the historical context and personal struggles of the characters are rich enough to carry the plot.
Theme & Tone
While Ricochet touches on themes of family and friendship—especially in the face of corruption—these themes are quite subtle, almost too much so. Rather than being woven naturally into the narrative, they require some effort to pick out, making them feel less impactful than they could have been. However, the tone remains consistent, balancing an atmosphere of historical tragedy with an undercurrent of hope. The setting, reminiscent of the animated Anastasia movie, is immersive and enchanting, successfully bringing early 20th-century Russia to life.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Ricochet is a solid retelling of the Romanov story. While it doesn’t reach the emotional heights or character depth of some of its peers, it still stands out as a highly enjoyable read. The fresh perspective on the aftermath of the Romanov family’s demise, combined with strong pacing and a great atmosphere, makes it one of the best retellings I’ve encountered. If you loved the Anastasia movie, you’ll likely appreciate the unique spin Carni puts on this historical tale.
