Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy and for being incredibly patient and helpful when there were issues with acquiring it. All opinions expressed are my own.
I’ve rated this 3 stars, but I want to emphasize that the translation likely influenced my reading experience. This Out of My Window book review reflects my thoughts as an English reader, but I believe the story would have had a stronger impact in its original language.
This book was translated by the author with the help of Google Translate and ChatGPT. While the story itself is accurately conveyed (which is impressive considering Google Translate was involved), the prose didn’t quite capture the intended emotional depth. This resulted in a somewhat clunky reading experience as an English reader.
That being said, I love Indian storytelling. My family and I are huge fans of Telugu cinema, so I was really excited to read Out of My Window. Indian stories have such a rich sense of love, courage, and emotional weight, and I could feel those elements within the narrative—despite the challenges of translation.
The story’s pacing felt a bit too quick, and the characters weren’t as complex or developed as I’d hoped. However, I suspect that’s more a product of the translation process or the story’s short format. The window’s twist was a standout, though! I think this story would thrive in a different format—perhaps a movie or a longer book—where the emotional and cultural nuances could be explored more fully.
Overall, Out of My Window has a really unique concept and incredible potential. I have high hopes that it will find its perfect medium one day—whether that’s in a longer book, a movie, or something else. If you enjoy Indian storytelling or are looking for a creative and heartfelt narrative, this one is worth a read.
